Will of John KNIBBS, 1698-1770


In the name of God Amen. I John Knibbs of Deddington in the county of
Oxford collar maker although laboring at present under some
indisposition of body but being of sound and disposing mind memory and
understanding through the mercy of God do make and ordain this my last
will and testament in manner and form following that is to say First
and principally I resign my soul with the utmost humility into the
hands of almighty God my creator humbly hoping for a blessed
immortality through the merits and mediation of my savior and redeemer
Jesus Christ and my body I desire may be decently buried at the
discretion of my executrix hereinafter named and as to such temporal
estate as the Lord in his great goodness and mercy hath intrusted me
to be steward of I give devise and disperse thereof as followeth First
I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be justly paid and
satisfied and discharged I give and devise unto my loving wife Jane
Knibbs all that my messuage cottage or tenement situate standing and
being in a certain street in Deddington aforesaid called the New
Street a tenement in the occupation of Charles O Mullan the southside
thereof and a tenement in the occupation of Edward Robinson weaver on
the northside thereof with the backside and barn and all other the
appurtenances thereunto belonging to hold to her the said Jane Knibbs
and her heirs and assigns forever I also give and bequeath unto my
sons John James Anthony Francis Thomas and Richard Knibbs to each of
them the sum of one shilling. All the rest residue and remainder of
my estates both real and personal goods chattels implements and things
of what nature or kind soever or wheresoever herein before not
disposed of I give devise and bequeath unto my said wife Jane Knibbs
and to her heirs and assigns forever. And I also nominate constitute
and appoint my said wife Jane Knibbs sole executrix of this my last
will and testament and I do hereby revoke disannul and make void all
other and former wills bequests and legacies by me at any time here
before heretofore made bequeathed and given and do declare this only
to be my last will and testament In witness where I the said John
Knibbs the testator have to this my last will and testament set my
hand and seal this seventeenth day of May in the third year of the
reign of our sovereign Lord George the third by the grace of God of
Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and forth
and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty
three. John Knibbs signed sealed published and declared by the said
John Knibbs testator as and for his last will and testament in the
presence of us who have subscribed our names as witness thereto ---
his presence and at his request Thomas Prestidge John Carter Richard
French This will was proved at Oxford on the 15 day of April in the
year of our Lord 1771 before the Rev John Henchman Clerk master of
Arts Surrogate of the Rev Daniel Burton Doctor in Divinity vicar
General official Principal and commissary of the Right Rev¹d father in
God Robert by divine permission Lord Bishop of Oxford lawfully
constituted by Oath of Jane Knibbs widow the --elect of the deceased
being first sworn duly to administer.
